What Is Severe Dysphagia ?
Dysphagia refers to difficulty swallowing, and severe dysphagia occurs when a person experiences significant difficulty with the process of swallowing both food and liquids. This can result from various underlying conditions such as neurological disorders, stroke, head or neck cancers, dementia, or muscular diseases that affect the muscles involved in swallowing. Severe dysphagia can manifest in several ways, including:
• Difficulty initiating swallowing
• Pain or discomfort when swallowing
• Coughing or choking while eating or drinking
• Feeling like food is “stuck” in the throat or chest
• Regurgitation of food or liquids
Severe dysphagia often requires careful management to prevent complications such as malnutrition, dehydration, aspiration pneumonia (which occurs when food or liquid enters the lungs), and weight loss.
